MA Researches Food Retail Trips to Inform New London Plan EIP Discussions
Markides Associates were instructed by Tesco Ltd. to carry out research and surveys at six Tesco stores to show the importance of the weekly / fortnightly main food shop to store income.
On average, only one third of trips surveyed were to undertake main food shops; however, two-thirds of the stores turnover were associated with main food shops. Questionnaire surveys at the stores showed that the private car was the main mode of transport used to carry out main food shops, even in locations with high PTAL ratings.
We used this research to put forward representations on behalf of Tesco at the New London Plan EIP; in particular, focusing on the proposals that required the removal of parking as part of any redevelopment of existing sites in high PTAL locations. Whilst this only resulted in a minor change to the proposed wording of the Plan by the Mayor, the Secretary of State has agreed with the risk to the delivery of mixed-use redevelopment on town centre sites and has directed the Mayor to amend the Draft New London Plan parking policy to address this issue.
